3 Storm Preparation – Home Storm Damage
3 Storm Preparation Tips for Your Home
Hurricanes, tornadoes, and severe storms can cause significant damage to your Madison, New Jersey home.
These three tips will help you prepare your home to withstand storm-related home storm damage.
1. Trim Your Trees Around Your Home
High winds can cause tree limbs to fall on your roof or impact your windows, causing damage. Holes in your roof or windows caused by tree limbs can lead to water damage. Trim any tree limbs that are too close to your house or that overhang your roof.
Heavy rain and high wind can combine to uproot trees with shallow root systems. If you live in an area with an increased risk for severe weather, you may want to remove trees that are close enough to fall on your home during a storm.
2. Protect Your Home From Flooding And Storm Damage
Flood water from storm surges, flash flooding, or overflowing rivers and streams can cause severe damage to your home. You can reduce the damage caused by flooding by placing sandbags or other flood barriers around your home whenever flooding is imminent. If your home is on a floodplain, consider elevating it above the flood level by placing it on stilts or pillars. Electrical equipment below the flood level in a flooded building can pose a safety risk. Move as much of this equipment as possible to a part of your home above the flood level.
3. Secure Outdoor Furniture and Fences
Anything outside your home, such as fences and outdoor furniture, should be secured so that high winds can not turn it into flying debris that could damage your home. Property that can not be secured should be moved indoors if possible.
Flood water and other weather hazards can pose a significant risk to your home. These three tips will help you avoid storm damage.
